Legs lead the way in summer's micro-minis

A bit of drama goes a long way on a catwalk.

Last night it was Megan Gale's strong nut-brown legs, kicking forward in a strapless, graphic patterned floor-sweeper frock, split down the middle and billowing like a parachute behind her, that burned into the memory of David Jones' 500 A-list guests in Melbourne's elegant town hall.

When the same frock, by Sydney brand Zimmermann, hangs slack on a rack in David Jones' city or Chadstone store — so the theory goes — the memory of those amazing legs will bring it back to life. Maybe even secure a sale.

David Jones stages two catwalk spectaculars a year to animate its Australian designer collections.

"The show marks the start of the season, the 'This is it!' moment of summer," said group general manager of merchandise Collette Garnsey.

Jump-starting seasons at Fashion Week

It'll be spring before you know it - and maybe even before the calendar does - if fashion designers have anything to say about it.

Responding to enthusiasm for seasonless shopping, many designers who presented their spring lines Friday at New York Fashion Week incorporated materials like wool, cashmere and even fur.

Liz Claiborne's spring line will be available in February, said vice president of design Richard Ostell.

"We spring forward with our palette so people can feel they'll get some mileage out of it," he said. "But there are no white bottoms until March!"

Friday's schedule was jam-packed, thanks to a change in schedule at this season's Fashion Week to accommodate the Rosh Hashanah holiday next week.

As the spring previews are nearing their midpoint, dainty dresses, pleat and pintuck details and color-blocking were emerging as trends.
